How To Clean And Shine Metal
Get the metals around your home shining bright with this guide on how to polish metal and keep it gleaming.
Go gently and don't be too zealous as vigorous cleaning can wear away the surface if metal is plated rather than solid. Try cleaning solutions on a spot that's hidden from view first. Seek advice before cleaning precious antique pieces – you could devalue them.
COPPER AND BRASS
- These metals have a wonderfully warm glint but will soon tarnish unless they have a protective lacquer coating.
- To polish up un-lacquered copper and brass, cut a lemon in half, sprinkle coarse salt onto the cut side and rub the metal, then rinse and dry.
- Or rub on a paste made of three tablespoons of white vinegar and one tablespoon of baking soda, wipe with a damp cloth then buff.
SILVER
- This can be gently buffed to a shine using a soft cloth and quality silver polish such as Town Talk Amazing Anti-Tarnish Silver Polish, £6.
- Wash silver cutlery separately from stainless steel – if the pieces touch when wet the silver can be damaged.
- Dry cutlery straight away, to avoid water stains.
- Silver Dip is a good way to get intricate silver pieces sparkling again.
- Or try the Sonic jewellery cleaning kit, from Argos, £19.99.
STAINLESS STEEL
- Revive marked surfaces with Steel Guard Intensive, from Lakeland, £3.99.
- After you've cleaned stainless steel appliances, a little baby oil applied on a cloth will keep them fingerprint free.
Multi-Purpose Cleaner
- Tackle everything from stainless steel to brass, copper, chrome and numerous other household surfaces with a bottle of Bar Keepers Friend, from Lakeland, £2.78.
