Greener Because of Grandma's Life Lessons - scottofirther73
I consider my grandparents the "O.G's" of environmentalism. Just to be clear, that's "Original Immature." The current fight-cry/sustainable-speak of "Reduce – Reuse – Reprocess" was merely a means of lifetime for those who lived through with world wars and the Great Depression.
My Gran, 92 when she passed by 4-years ago, taught me all the best lessons about being green. As far as I make love, she ne'er thought about her path as environmentally progressive. And I think she'd probably father a kick out of the fact that entire blogs, books and websites are dedicated to recreating the art of "homesteading;" since that was hardly her path of life.
Sunday-go-to-meeting practices from Grandma:
- Composting in the garden long before it was 'a thing.'
- Repurposing glass jars for canning, centerpieces surgery to store buttons.
- Purchasing in bulk to saved money, only also significantly reduction one's carbon footprint because of minimal packaging (they were absolute the dream without even pregnant to!)
- Knowing the esteem if borax, lemon juice and vinegar for cleaning.
- Building your own clothes line for drying: it gives wearing apparel that really "outdoor fresh scent" and is magnificent for bleaching whites without chlorine and other harmful toxins (this thaumaturgy is especially handy for cloth diapers and baby apparel!)
- Choosing quality over amount – especially when it comes to clothes and furniture. When a garment had worn out IT's welcome (yes, in for – punning intended), grannie would tie the material pieces into a pot bearer or combine them with otherwise corporate garbage and make a rug (I am real!).
Some of my favorite lessons learned from Grandma were gleaned in the kitchen. When it came to cooking, meals – and especially treats – were made from chicken feed. This included mouth watering stews, heavenly breads and pies with fruit picked from one of several yield trees (when I was young, their property included the following varieties of yield trees: two plum, one apricot, two crimson and a peach.) Really, is on that point a amended creation than from-scratch cherry pie? (That's a rhetorical question, apparently.)
From those trees, grape vines, razz bushes and veggie garden, the summertime's bounty would be dried, canned and frozen so get could be enjoyed year turn – a start contrast to nowadays's norm of produce shipped from Chile.
Quotidian I have the chance to observ her legacy. Give thanks you Grandma, for teaching me the art of being political party!
